Celebrating Our First Year, Together
Looking back throughout my short 32 years of life, there are only a few close people who have had such a deep impact on the person I am at this moment. Two of which I must note right away. My grandmother, Millie whom I could spend days and days writing about and sharing all sorts of stories on. And the other would be my (to the world “stepdad”) but to me and my siblings just plain ol’ dad. And today, I celebrate Charley.
His birthday is just a few days away, on May 19th. It is hard to believe it will be 8 years this fall that we had to say goodbye. For now.
Last year while reflecting on the path I was going to take regarding photography I just really wanted to honor him in my home and in my life. And so on May 19, 2018 I decided to give this small business a chance and go for our LLC, officially creating Jessica Patnesky Portraits. This first year has been full of learning, joy and at moments some stress and a touch of fear. Something I can relate to as a parent and something that makes this small LLC even more precious to me.
There are so many goals and dreams planned for JPP, just as my dad had so many goals and dreams for the family he chose. And it was one of those moments that just felt right.
The first goal I had made officially for JPP was to honor my dad yearly. I knew that I wanted to donate a portion of select photo sessions to a cancer research organization. This has been very special to me since my wedding day as both myself and my husband both lost a parent to cancer. My dad to lung cancer and my husband’s mother to pancreatic cancer and we made a donation in both their names then, and this is something I still want to do.
And so with that, for the entire summer of 2019 a portion of EVERY portrait session will be donated to a research organization. Now, let me get on my soapbox for just a moment. We all know there are dozens of research and charity organizations out there. Some spend their money a little more wisely than others and so appropriate time needed spent on deciding where to actually make a donation that will be best used. And for that take I use Charity Navigator. They rate various organizations based on specific criteria and this tool is super useful in being cautious while giving.
And with that for the months of June, July and August 15% of all sessions will be donated to three select organizations:
June- Lung Cancer Research Foundation in honor of my dad, Charles Henderson.
July- The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research in honor of my mother-in-law, Sue Patnesky. August- Alex’s Lemonade Stand in honor of every single child who has or is fighting cancer.
I cannot think of a better way to celebrate my dad’s birthday or JPP’s birthday! Please feel free to follow and support these organizations and tell me more about what causes and organizations you are passionate about!
Also, keep an eye out for a special JPP Turns One portrait session special, to be announced very soon!! <3
